What does bumping a thread actually do?

I believe it pushes the thread, or 'bumps' it, back to the top of the list without having to actually make a post. You might do that if you wanted to draw attention to a thread for some reason. I've never used it, but if you bump a thread it should move back to the top of the thread list with only the sticky threads above it.

Okay, thanks. That sounds fairly harmless. I just wondered for possible future reference what it did.

After re-reading older threads I saw this, bumping is, like Steve said, getting a thread back to the top of a list, but it's unfair to do it, seeing as other people want their threads read as well
