Finally, even if you move to a new image host, that isn't a problem - just use the Replace All feature to edit all URLs on the page with a single click within WordPad.
There's probably room for further refinement, but I think it's the basis of a good system. You may possibly separate your pics into Jack, Sam, etc. on different pages, but you should still be able to adapt it to suit your needs if you plan the file names carefully.
Let me know if you see any flaws in it, Spymaster, and if you have any questions then just ask.

Oh dear! I haven't even been considering bandwidth, because for the moment there just won't be too many people visiting the screencaps site so it shouldn't be an issue (hopefully). I have the Photobucket bandwidth limit stored in a folder here, I'll have a look. Yep, it's 1,500 MB (1.5GB) per month. We're averaging 35KB per jpeg, so: 1,500,000,000 divided by 35,000 = 42,857 pic downloads per month. It will be a long time before we exceed that. Thanks for the info on Ripway though, Spymaster, I'll have a look at their bandwidth restrictions later. I assume it must be a whole lot less than Photobucket. It is a lot less than photobucket. It's 10mb over 24 hours but it doesn't reset and it's really strange I don't get the system at all. Thanks for the instructions Steve. Notepad does have a replace feature I used it yesterday when I was changing the links. Hopefully *cross fingers* when I upload endgame I'll be able to do it with the minimum of work, not that I'm lazy you understand it's just a real time suck. Uploading is so annoying and one of the reasons why I went with ripway because uploading in photobucket you can only upload 19 pictures at a time and have to find them individually - it takes a long time when you have 639 to do. On another note do you have any idea why Irfranview doesn't convert them in order. I wanted to do a batch rename with all the pics in order and I put them to be in order but there were a lot of mistakes which I had to sort out so it made sense. If you want to have a look (not that you probably would) Without a Trace screencaps

Believe it or not I'm still using Windows 98 here, Spymaster, so I mostly only see the old version of Notepad. I just powered up the laptop though and of course you're correct that XP Notepad does now finally have a Replace facility.
Yes, I know what you mean about having to select each image individually. It's a shame Photobucket doesn't support Zip uploads, which is one of the few really good features on Freewebs.
I'll have a look at the sequence issue in Irfanview because that's a bit pointless eh if you can do a speedy conversion and rename but then have to put them back into sequence yourself. They're great quality caps by the way. They look like they were live off-air rather than off videotape.

They were live off air Steve courtsey of a friend of mines PVR software. It recorded in AVI XviD format video (which for 45 mins is about 350mb). I can do exactly the same for the reruns that are starting on channel 4 next monday now I've finally manage to fix it (My PVR software was configured wrong) which is great because it means rather than having video tapes cluttering up the place I can just have the file on my PC and then take audio/video/screencaps from it whenever I like at good quality. I have two whole seasons like that catalogued on my PC and with the reruns I'm hoping to add season 2 to the mix.
Thanks for having a look at that sequence. That'll really help me out

Ok Steve I have a question. I want to host some files using this provider but I don't want anybody to know where I'm linking them from. Is it possible to either hide where you are linking an image from or disguise it so people think that it's coming from one place when actually it's coming from another?
Ok that wasn't very coherent. It's nothing illegal or anything it's just my mum has webspace for her business that she's not using (I know I'm the website editor) and well she's got more than she'll ever need and I could do with some of it for what I do. What I don't want is for people to go to my site and see where I'm linking pictures etc. from because well it's privacy isn't it. My online persona is one I want to keep entirely separate from home because of safety, you never know who people are and if it's not possible then I won't do it but you know about tech stuff and so if you could help me I'd really appreciate it. Thanks

Hmmm, I know what you mean but I can't think of a way to achieve it. If a solution exists, it would probably be in the form of dedicated encryption software. I think software exists which will encrypt and protect html source code (protect it from being viewed and copied) but I don't know if there is anything which would encrypt just the image urls, and conceal the origin of the images. Sorry, that isn't much help but it's a scenario I've never heard of nor thought about before.

Ok from googling the net I've solved that one. Only took me till the small hours of the morning to find the code but I've done it so that's cool. For your reference I found the answer hereIt's not fool proof obviously but I think it'll work. I just discovered a glitch in the system which I'm trying to fix. You don't know how to create a link that prompts the download & 'save to' message instead of displaying the image (or media file) in the browser? Bascially, it's for desktop downloads, and I'd like to do it this way instead of having visitors right-click and save. (mostly because the right click and save doesn't work with the method I'm using to hide the URL) Thanks in advance SteveSpy_Master

Hi Spymaster, 1. I'm just checking into the sequencing problem when doing a batch rename in Irfanview, so I'll get back to you on that later, hopefully. I thought I'd have a look first to see if there was a known bug, which there doesn't appear to be, but I'm glad I looked because I came across an excellent tutorial page for Irfanview. It can do screen caps (which I didn't know) and it can do batch brightness increase/decrease, batch resize, batch add text to image, generate thumbnails - loads of things which I didn't know about. Here's the link: www.bcae1.com/comptutorial/irfanview.html2. If you want to set up a test on the image source encryption sometime, I'll see if I can find a way around it and get back to the source. Don't use the server in question, obviously, but you could put a file on Photobucket or Ripway or somewhere and I'll see if I can track it down. 3. To prompt a 'save to' message, you will probably need to add some javascript - it might be worth searching the javascript code archive sites, where I expect one will already exist. 4. Did you ask me somewhere if there was a way to open multiple websites with a single click? I have a feeling you asked me how to open, say, several Freewebs sites every so often so the accounts wouldn't be closed due to the fact that nobody had visited for a certain period, or did I dream that one? 5. That guide to characterisation is still on my list - it hasn't been forgotten about.

Thanks for that. I'll make sure to delve into that next time I'm stuck. I too have been looking into the sequencing problem and after an extensive trial I've come to the conclusion that it's not Infran that's the problem after all (sorry for wasting your time) it's my WinTV. It saves them in the wrong order in the first place. I think from now on I'll cap using PowerDVD. Much less hassle. Thanks for the offer. When I've solved this present problem I'll probably take you up on that. The only article I can find on this is www.infomentum.com/appletfile/doc/FileDownload.htm#parametersand I can't make head nor tail of it. It seems to be more of a tutorial where all I want is to be able to download something, change a couple of things and then bam done. If you know of something better (or you can understand it) let me know You dreamed that one and you can consider the above request as payback for thinking that I'd be that stupid only kidding. No, what I actually asked you was whether you knew of a program that would give me an alert every say five days so that I remembered to go and sign in. Glad to hear it. ;D

Thought that I should explain my problem with a few more details attached.
I posted that over at webdeveloper and am awaiting a response. You don't know of anywhere else I could post a query? I only just found that place today but I'm sure there are many others and the more places I post the better the chance I'll get an answer.

I have the same problem with the sequencing - WinTV alters the sequence when it saves the caps to the hard-drive. I don't think I was aware of that before this morning. I'll be checking out the Irfanview screencap capability sometime to see if it's any better. One problem with my WinTV card/software is that it doesn't dump each file to the hard-disk as the cap is taken, but keeps them in memory instead. Usually I wait until an ad-break and then save what I have so far. Problem is that my machine will occasionally crash if I've taken too many caps, so I lose the lot (because they were only in memory) so I'll see if Irfanview overcomes that problem.
On the download prompt, I'm sure there must be a simpler solution using javascript, so I'll see if I can track one down.

No, sorry, I don't really use any sites like that, although as you say there must be plenty of them.

I don't use reminder programs, Spymaster, but here's a search for freeware reminder programI wonder if you're making any progress on the image 'Save As' issue. I searched for a suitable javascript yesterday but I didn't find anything which was ideally suited. I tested maybe 8 or so, and I did find one which could maybe be modified to do the job. Also, I reckon the download applet which you found could be modified to suit without too much difficulty. Having said that, I'm still not entirely sure how everything is going to fit together. I assume you will have an index page leading off to thumbnail pages, then when a thumbnail is clicked on, the image will open full-size. At this stage, right-clicking is non-functional, so this is where you need the on-click popup Save As dialog box, is that about right?

Thanks for that reminder link thing. I did do a search myself but wondered if you had a recommendation. Downloaded one now so hopefully that'll all be A ok.
I'm not making any progress on the image 'save as' issue. One because if it was images I wouldn't have a problem and two because I haven't solved my actual problem.
You see it's not images that I have a problem with the hosting for. It's the video files and files which are too large to get dependable hosting for. I think I should start at the beginning.
My mother has webhosting that she's mainly not using. I've managed to broker a deal with her in that she will let me have the webspace that she's not using on the grounds that nobody who'll visit my website to download the video files etc. will be able to see that they're not hosted on my webspace but on hers.
I solved that problem by using this code
However, this makes the video file open in windows media player and I want visiters to download it, otherwise it's a waste of bandwith. Obviously because the link from my original page leads to the html page with the above script in it visiters can't right click save as, which leaves me with a problem. I want when they click on the link which takes them to the page with the above code in it for a download box to open asking them what they want to do, save, open etc. So therefore they have the ability to save which currently they do not.
Hope that makes sense
Also I'm sure that the download applet that I found would work but I'm too stupid really to work out how to use it as it's in a tutorial form and I can't work out what's meant to go where. I prefer where you just download and then change a few details. Any help with this would be much appreciated.
Thanks Spy_Master
